Day 2
Day 2: Stone Town and Prison Island — the old heart of Zanzibar
A day trip to a UNESCO old town, then a boat to an island of giant tortoises.
UNESCO Stone Town
Prison Island tortoises
Your driver takes you from the beach to Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 2000. You walk its narrow lanes with a guide, past carved doors, the Old Fort built by the Omanis in the 17th century, and the Palace Museum on the seafront. At Christ Church, built on the site of the island’s largest slave market, a monument and a museum tell the history of the slave trade. The House of Wonders, partly collapsed in 2020, is seen from outside.
In the afternoon a boat takes you to Prison Island, where Aldabra giant tortoises live, with time to swim and snorkel from the beach. If you wish, end the day at Forodhani Gardens, where a seafood market opens after sunset (dinner is a paid extra), before the drive back to your beach hotel.
