Tag 1: Welcome to Sri Lanka — the elephants and the village
Airport welcome, the Pinnawala elephants and a traditional village.

On arrival at the airport, our representative welcomes you. The route passes through Pinnawala, with a visit to the elephant orphanage or the elephant foundation, depending on the programme available.
Then continue to Sigiriya for a tour of the traditional village. Overnight in Sigiriya.
Sri Lanka’s cultural heartland lies a few hours north of the airport. Plan for a long first day on the road, with generous breaks.
Stop 1 — Pinnawala elephants
A well-known elephant orphanage and a nearby elephant foundation care for elephants of all ages, and the river where they bathe is a highlight when open to visitors. The visit depends on the programme available.
Stop 2 — Village life
A gentle introduction to rural Sri Lanka: paddy fields, village houses and local food traditions, often with a bullock-cart or boat ride where offered.

Visit Sigiriya Rock, then travel to Kandy. On the way, the Dambulla cave temple (optional) and a spice garden.
In Kandy, tour Kandy Lake and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth, visit gem, wood and batik workshops and enjoy a cultural dance show. Overnight in Kandy.
A morning on the rock, then a scenic drive into the hills towards Kandy, with refreshment stops along the way.
Stop 1 — Sigiriya Rock
A UNESCO World Heritage site: a massive rock topped by the ruins of a fifth-century royal palace. The climb is by steel stairways, passing the Mirror Wall and the Lion’s Paws, and rewards you with a view over the jungle plain. Start early to avoid the heat; the climb is moderate but includes many steps.
Stop 2 — Dambulla cave temple (optional)
A UNESCO-listed complex of caves filled with painted ceilings and many Buddha statues. Modest dress is required and shoes are removed at the entrance.
Stop 3 — Spice garden
A demonstration garden where herbs and spices such as cinnamon, cardamom and pepper are shown and explained, with local products for sale.
Stop 4 — Kandy Lake and the Temple of the Tooth
Walk beside the lake in the heart of the old royal capital, then visit the temple that houses the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha, one of the island’s holiest sites. Dress modestly.
Stop 5 — Workshops and cultural show
Craft workshops for gems, wood and batik, and an evening show of traditional Kandyan dance and drumming.

Leave for Ella through the scenery of Nuwara Eliya, the tea plantations and a tea factory.
Visit Little Adam’s Peak and the Nine Arches Bridge, if time allows. Overnight in Ella.
The road climbs into Sri Lanka’s tea hills, where the air cools and the landscape turns to endless green terraces. This is one of the island’s most beautiful drives.
Stop 1 — Nuwara Eliya and a tea factory
Pass the colonial-era hill town known as «Little England», then see how Ceylon tea is picked, withered and processed, ending with a tasting.
Stop 2 — Little Adam’s Peak
An easy walk through tea fields to a viewpoint with wide views over Ella and the valley.
Stop 3 — Nine Arches Bridge
A graceful stone railway viaduct set in the jungle, popular for photographs when a train crosses.

The journey turns south from the hills to the plains. The day mixes a waterfall with a tranquil lake in the dry zone.

A broad waterfall beside the road that flows down in several tiers; a short photo and rest stop.
Stop 2 — Tissa Lake and temple
A large ancient reservoir, with a white temple beside it and good birdwatching, best in the late afternoon.

A morning safari in Yala National Park, then the Dutch fort of Galle.

Then travel to Galle and visit the Dutch fort. Overnight on the southern coast (Unawatuna area).
An early start for wildlife, then the drive down to the southern coast and a stroll in Galle at the golden hour.
Stop 1 — Yala National Park
One of the island’s best-known wildlife reserves, home to elephants, leopards, sloth bears and many birds. Safaris leave early in a 4×4 vehicle with a tracker; sightings are never guaranteed, and the park has closure periods.
Stop 2 — Galle Fort
A UNESCO-listed fortified town built by the Portuguese and Dutch, with ramparts above the sea, a lighthouse, colonial houses and small shops and cafés to explore on foot.
